Magnetic Traces is a festival designed around the notion of immersive listening by drawing on concepts emanating from sound art, acoustic ecology, bioacoustics, improvisation and electroacoustic composition to highlight the pervasive nature of sound and the ways in which it permeates our daily lives. The artists selected for the festival have each been investigating the complex relationship between sound, environment and space to demonstrate new modes of articulation and experience by using the specific characteristics of place and its attendant acoustics and dynamics to shape compositional methods. The outcomes therefore usually comprise an amalgam of the spatial and environmental characteristics of the sites the artists each encounter through their fieldwork. These encounters often lead to the embodiment of a broad range of environmental, social, and political issues within a compositional framework reflecting the poetic, philosophical and aesthetic priorities of each artist. The benefit of this methodology is that sound artists can bring to their work a set of ideological imperatives connected to a broader contemporary discourse using various methods of recording and publication to interrogate and disseminate issues of public interest.
